Ekstrawagancja to jednak ostatnia cecha, o jaką można podejrzewać kanclerz Niemiec.

Brussels bets over Merkel's jackets...

Betting the colour of the jacket of Angela Merkel, has become one of the favourite activities for journalists bored with waiting for the news from the EU summit. The subject of the bet is far from being trivial, as the German Chancellor has been loyal to her costumes for many years now. Wherever she appears in Germany or abroad Angela Merkel always wears the same looking clothes: trousers and jacket with a small collar, covering her decolletage and thighs.“She is like in the American movie “Full Metal Jacket” and giving her force I think it is an interesting comparison” jokes Zoltan Gyevai from Hungarian press agency BruxInfo. He also makes another this time, political comparison: “I also heard some people saying that her jackets remind the ones of North Korean leader but are more colorful”.
Colours of clothes of the most powerful woman in Europe are not without significance though. “Some people see a symbol in the colours she is wearing. For instance now we have coalition negotiations in Germany. It can be black and red coalition and these are exactly the colours she is wearing today” told me at the last summit, Ruth Bershohens, correspondent of “Handelsblatt”.  The rainbow of Merkels’ jackets is well known to all the photographers in Brussels. “If it is not over-saturated I don’t mind, otherwise it burns the censor of the camera” jokes Thierry Monasse. Extravagance is however the last thing one can expect from Chancellor Merkel.
Another woman, at the EU summit, Danish Prime Minister on the contrary, despite her function, loves to wear expressive and brave clothes. At one of the summits this year she was wearing a jacket and high heels in the same, dalmatian pattern. During the Danish Presidency in the EU, her fan club in Brussels has grown significantly as the tall, blond Prime Minister was wearing tight, bright pink costumes. “For me she is definitely the most beautiful state leader here” admits one of her fans, Rafaelo Porto from “Europolitics”. Charming Helle Thorning Schmidt has very  recently caused a bit of a diplomatic scandal when Barack Obama and David Cameron were caught making private photos with her, during the ceremony to honor Nelson Mandela.
For Angela Merkel. Danish Prime Minister for many reasons is far to be an example though... One diplomatic explanation that people working with her give, is that the Chancellor simply feels good in her “uniform”.  Brussels' master of sarcasm, Marco Zatterini from La Stampa explains it in his best way: “It is normal for all the people who want to act like a superman or a super hero. Merkel is always dressing herself in the same way, and so is Berlusconi, just like superman or spiderman. So all the people who want to save the world, give the people a pattern of themselves by wearing the same clothes”.
